What is a Tabata Timer?
A Tabata timer is an interval timer built for Tabata training, a form of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) developed by Japanese scientist Dr. Izumi Tabata and his team at the National Institute of Fitness and Sports in Tokyo. It alternates short bursts of all-out effort with brief rests so you can train hard without watching the clock.
The classic Tabata protocol
The original protocol is famously simple and brutally effective:
- •20 seconds of maximum-intensity work
- •10 seconds of rest
- •Repeated for 8 rounds — just 4 minutes in total
The goal is intensity: push as hard as you safely can during every work interval, then recover briefly before the next round.
How to use this timer
- 1Tap the gear icon to set your active duration, break duration, and rounds. The defaults are the classic 20 / 10 × 8.
- 2Press Start. A short “Get Ready” countdown leads into your first work round.
- 3Listen for the audio cues that signal the start of each work and rest interval, plus a final sound when you finish.
- 4Use Pause and Reset anytime. Your settings are saved in your browser for next time.
Frequently asked questions
- Is Tabata the same as HIIT?
- Tabata is a specific, highly structured form of high-intensity interval training (HIIT). All Tabata is HIIT, but not all HIIT follows the strict 20-seconds-on, 10-seconds-off, eight-round format.
- How long is a Tabata workout?
- The classic protocol is just 4 minutes — 20 seconds of work and 10 seconds of rest repeated for 8 rounds. With this timer you can adjust the durations and rounds to build longer or shorter sessions.
- Can I use it for other interval workouts?
- Yes. Change the active duration, break duration, and number of rounds to set up circuit training, boxing rounds, EMOM workouts, stretching intervals, or even focused study sprints.
- Do I need any equipment?
- No. Tabata is traditionally done with bodyweight exercises like squats, burpees, mountain climbers, or sprints. Just press start and go.
